White River Ranger District USFS Cabins are part of our Northwest heritage and a National treasure. They number almost 200 and are located between Greenwater and Mt. Rainier National Park, many within a mile of Crystal Mountain Blvd. Amenities and size vary widely from rustic to wonderful. All have electricity and most have water and a septic system. Quite a few remain primitive with an out house. Five groups of cabins branch out and upwards from SR 410: Silver Creek, Silver Springs, Goat Creek, Deep Creek and The Dalles. The White River Recreation Association is a voluntary membership organization that acts as a liaison and information source between cabin owners and the USFS. They conduct business meetings and arrange seasonal social gatherings for the membership throughout the year. The Dalles Campground summer picnic is a favorite with families. Newsletters and a cabin owner telephone directory are provided to members. A legal fund is supported by donations and fund raising.
Cabin owners own only the improvements. The under-lying land is held by leasehold "Permit" with the United States Forest Service. Sales are rare, most families have owned their cabins for generations. "Permits" are renewed every 20 years Nationally - the next renewal will be in 2030. Typically, conventional financing is not available.
Many of the cabins have been historically designated by the state of Washington.
